A Consultant’s Product Edge

On my very first project team I was the designated Associate Product Manager by role, not title. I worked closely with designers and engineers to draft “user stories” and implement our “product roadmap,” but I was sure these were learned elements of consulting as a whole, not an industry-accepted product methodology. When a year passed and it came time to choose a new project endeavor, I learned that an up-and-coming area of our firm was exclusively devoted to building digital products, and sought to mold product managers from the ground up. Thus, my door into formal product management revealed itself and I began a rewarding trajectory of growth, understanding and experimentation across the product lifecycle.
